WHAT IF I’VE ALREADY TRIED THERAPY AND IT DIDN’T WORK?
The most frustrating part about going to therapy and becoming vulnerable is realizing that it was not effective. What a waste of time, right? While therapy takes time to become effective, even in ideal therapy situations, there are other factors that you might want to re-evaluate.
Finding the right therapist might be one of the most crucial factors for effectiveness. Not every therapist is a good fit for everyone and not every therapeutic approach is one size fits all. If you have had a negative experience with a particular therapist or a certain type of treatment, it could be difficult to try therapy again, even if you want support. I’m here to remind you to not give up on yourself.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind when looking for a therapist:
Look for a therapist who has experience dealing with what you’re struggling with.
If you don’t necessarily know what you are struggling with or what the issue is, try to chat with potential therapists about your symptoms.
Keep in mind that therapy is not one size fits all. Different therapeutic approaches may be better for different psychological distresses or different personality types, depending on you and the therapist. If you didn’t feel heard in therapy before, or if you experience different symptoms, a different therapist might be a better fit for you.
Most therapists will inform you about whether what you are struggling with, is out of their professional scope, and will proceed to recommend other potential therapists. I offer a FREE 15-Minute consultation to discuss your needs and goals, and if we are not a good fit, I will be sure to provide you with some referrals.
