How to Manage an Emotionally Draining Week

Feeling burned out and emotionally drained?

Prolonged stress will most likely have you feeling helpless, disheartened, and completely exhausted. Many aspects of your day-to-day life can cause emotional depletion such as your workplace, lifestyle, or even personality traits. Lets explore what to look for:

Workplace:

  1. You feel like you have little to no control over your workload.
  2. You realize you have been working super hard with little to no recognition.
  3. Your boss is continuously asking more of you and is demanding high expectations.
  4. You dread going to work every morning and starting to feel that your job is monotonous and no longer exciting.
  5. You perceive that your work environment is chaotic and anxiety provoking.

Lifestyle:

  1. You seem to work excessively and spend little to no time with your family.
  2. You seem to go on with life without getting enough time to socialize with your friends or relax.
  3. You find yourself losing close supportive relationships.
  4. You find yourself taking on too many responsibilities, without asking or receiving help from others.
  5. You seem to neglect yourself and not receive adequate sleep.

Personality Traits:

  1. You find yourself seeking perfectionism and often have to start over because nothing is ever good enough.
  2. You seem to be critical of yourself and just struggle with kindness.
  3. You find the need to be in control all the time.
  4. You find yourself struggling to ask for help and you are often reluctant to delegate to others.

Now you are probably wondering, but Mariam, what can I do about it? Here are a few tips and tricks to help you maneuver around things. Think of the acronym S.T.O.P.

S: Stop what you are physically doing and just be still.

T: Take a few deep breaths and only focus on your breathing. (inhale, hold, exhale).

O: Observe and pay attention to what you’re feeling in your body and identify what you're feeling. Ask yourself “what am I feeling in my heart and what am I feeling in my body”.

P: Proceed with purpose. What is it that you need right now? And remember to provide your body and soul with whatever it needs (e.g., rest, a vacation, or proper sustenance).

I hope this was helpful for you, and remember you can always reach out to me.
